Abstract

This proposal outlines a three-month research stay at the London School of Economics (UK) as part of the VOICES project (The Value of Openness, Inclusion, Communication, and Engagement for Science in a Post-Pandemic World), funded in Brazil by Fapesp. The purpose of this visit is to further investigate science communication and open science within the VOICES project, emphasizing their necessary alliance in fostering an inclusive scientific culture. Publications, conference presentations, and preprints from the project demonstrate that the pandemic has highlighted the need for the open science movement to expand beyond scholarly publishing. Collaborating with other stakeholders in the science infrastructure is crucial for promoting inclusivity in science. However, expanding open science beyond academia can be challenging. To address this, Martin Bauer, an experienced researcher in the field of public understanding of science, can provide valuable expertise. The proposal aims to use the findings of the VOICES project to investigate changes in scientific conduct during the pandemic and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the challenges, obstacles, and facilitators of the science-society relationship. If time allows, a case study on the impact of the influential report from The Imperial College of London regarding death projections during the pandemic can be conducted. The partnership with Professor Martin Bauer, along with the affiliation with the London School of Economics, known for its impactful research in the social sciences, will be significant to expanding the scope, relevance, and dissemination of VOICES project.
