Abstract

Medicinal chemistry is a scientific knowledge area that has a direct impact on the health and on social welfare, working on the discovery, development and action mode of new drugs. In Brazil, the work carried out by the Medicinal Chemistry Center at UNICAMP stands out for its public-private partnerships in medicinal chemistry, and is a benchmark for radical drug innovation. Despite the remarkable relevance of the subject, communication of scientific advances in medicinal chemistry still lacks efforts to reach the general public, using simple language that is accessible to non-specialists, including information about the scientific production process and the potential of national research in the new drugs development. In this sense, science journalism can make a fundamental contribution to bring science producers closer to the community in which they operate. Thus, this science journalism project aims to bridge the gap and strengthen the relationship between the scientific knowledge produced by medicinal chemistry and the general public, broadening the debate on the importance of science and producing journalistic content for the Laboratory for Advanced Studies in Journalism media, such as ComCiência magazine, for non-specialist audiences interested in scientific culture. The project will be anchored at the Medicinal Chemistry Center, based at the Center for Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering at the State University of Campinas. However, its scope is broader and also aims to cover other relevant scientific advances in the medicinal chemistry field.
