Abstract

This project aims to manufacture and characterize core-shell fibers with optical and magneto-optical properties, derived from oxide glasses of the B2O3 - Al2O3 - Ga2O3 system containing Tb3+, Gd3+ and/or Dy3+ ions solubilized in their glass network. The glasses will be prepared using the classical methodology of fusion followed by thermal shock. The preforms, derived from these compositions, will be obtained by the suction method and will, subsequently, be used to obtain core-shell optical fibers, with the aid of an optical fiber pulling tower. The properties of glasses and fibers will be studied using the following characterization techniques: Thermal Analysis (DSC and DMTA), X-ray Diffraction, UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopies, Raman and M-Lines, Optical Microscopy and Luminescence. The magneto-optical properties will be analyzed using the Faraday rotation method, which involves measuring the rotation angle (¸) and subsequent calculation of the Verdet constant (VB) values at different wavelengths. The characterizations, such as the attenuation values of the optical signal of the fibers, will be obtained using the cut-back technique.
