Abstract

Sparassidae includes small to large-sized, wandering, laterigrade spiders, with two tarsal claws and scopulae on tarsi and metatarsi. Its main synapomorphies are the presence of a trilobate membrane at the distal dorsal end of the metatarsi and claw tufts with distally bifid setae. Currently, it includes 1456 species, in 96 genera, distributed worldwide. Among the Sparassidae, spiders of the genus Caayguara Rheims are characterized by having intermarginal denticles on their chelicerae; two pairs of spines on the ventral surface of the tibiae and a lateral spine on metatarsals I-II; male palps with medial RTA and embolus with keels and projections; female vulva with the median part of the copulatory ducts expanded, forming a sac-shaped structure, and the posterior part with several linearly arranged lobes. The genus currently includes 12 species distributed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Examination of material recently deposited at the Butantan Institute resulted in the detection of a new species and many new locality records for already described species. The purpose of this project is to describe this new species and review all recent material, verifying its identification and compiling locality data. Furthermore, we intend to present an identification key and an update of the distribution maps for all known species of the genus.
