Abstract

The objective of the study will be to evaluate the effectiveness of grape pomace in controlling Haemonchus contortus in lambs. Twenty animals will be divided into two groups, which will remain in individual pens throughout the experiment. Initially, the feed will be the same for both groups, corresponding to 4% of the body weight. Half of the feed will consist of chopped hay, and the other half will be concentrate, composed of corn (70%) and soybean meal (30%). This will be the diet for the control group throughout the experiment. On the other hand, the group treated with grape pomace will receive the same proportion of chopped hay, but their concentrate will have 20% dried and ground grape pomace in the composition. After an initial adaptation period to the diets and deworming treatments to make them free from gastrointestinal nematode infections, all lambs will be artificially infected with 4000 infective larvae of H. contortus. Fecal samples will be collected individually every seven days for egg counts per gram of feces and coprocultures, as well as blood samples for hematological analyses, biochemical analyses, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All animals will be humanely slaughtered 28 days after infection for the quantification of helminths present in the abomasum. Variables with repeated measures will be analyzed using the Generalized Linear Model procedure (PROC GLM) of the Statistical Analysis System. Means will be compared by Tukey's Test at a significance level of 5%.
