Abstract The goal of this project is to introduce the student to the theoretical and experimentall aspects Brillouin scattering in waveguides and its usage as a temperature and strain sensor. The student will interact with senior graduate students also investigating Brillouin scattering in nanophotonics waveguides.1. Study the fundamentals of the Brillouin scattering: elasto-optic effect and electrosctriction.2. Investigate experimental techniques to characterize Brillouin spectrum: optical and electrical (homodyne) methods3. Characterize Brillouin spectrum in optical fibers. Infer temperature and strain from Brillouin spectrum4. Understand and participate of the advanced Brillouin experiments in integrated optical waveguides along with senior students. | |
