Abstract

The primary purpose of this project is to evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-caries potential of the essential oil of Matricaria chamomilla in a microcosm biofilm model on dental enamel. The essential oil used in this study, sourced from the Via Aroma brand, will be commercially acquired. To analyze its anticariogenic capacity, the microcosm biofilm model using human saliva on bovine enamel will be employed for a period of 5 days. Enamel samples will be divided into the following treatment groups: 1. Pure Matricaria chamomilla essential oil (n=12 for CFU and TMR); 2. Matricaria chamomilla essential oil with fluoride (n=12 for CFU and TMR); 3. 225 ppm Sodium Fluoride (NaF); 4. PerioGard® as positive control (Chlorhexidine, n=12 for CFU and TMR); 5. PBS as negative control (n=12 for CFU and TMR). To evaluate the antimicrobial effect, counting of Colony Forming Units (Log10 CFU/mL) will be performed in culture medium for Streptococcus mutans/sobrinus and total Lactobacillus bacteria. Transverse Microradiography (TMR) will be employed to measure demineralization. All data obtained will be subjected to statistical analysis (p<0.05).
