Abstract

The production and dissemination of images in cinema and television under the label "popular culture" or "folklore" has, as a rule, eclipsed the African origins of such manifestations. During almost the entire 20th century, at different moments in national history, elements from this universe were mobilized as popular culture by hegemonic or counter-hegemonic groups, representing different projects in Brazil. The mapping of this audiovisual material will serve as a basis for the analysis of identity stereotypes of Afro-Brazilian culture, produced and broadcast by TV Tupi in its news programs, before and after the 1964 coup.
