Abstract

Green diesel is a fuel from renewable sources, e.g. waste oils, animal fats, fat from sewage sludge, and ethanol, which has been developed to partially or completely replace fossil diesel. However, this fuel has a similar composition to fossil diesel (e.g. paraffinic hydrocarbons), making it infeasible to differentiate the two fuels, using the official method to quantify biodiesel in a mixture with diesel, which is based on spectroscopy in the infrared region. In view of this, it is proposed to evaluate the difference in green diesel produced from different raw materials, using the isotopic composition ´13C and ´2H. Subsequently, the development of two analytical methods, the first to distinguish fossil diesel from green diesel produced from mixtures of raw materials, using the isotopic composition ´13C, ´15N, ´2H and ´34S, and the second to monitor the hydrodeoxygenation process carried out during the production of green diesel, through the isotopic composition ´18O and ´17O. The first proposal aims to understand the isotopic composition of each matrix, for the development of analytical methods with high analytical reliability. For the development of analytical methods, chemometric tools will be used, such as PCA and Cluster.
