The project proposes the development of a cost-effective microfluidic device for determining biodiesel content in diesel blends aiming at in-situ analysis. Some materials will be evaluated for device development, such as silica, glass or polymer chips with channels designed using support of paper, thread or cloth. The analytical method for determining biodiesel content in diesel blends will be based on reaction of the alkyl esters with hydroxylamine in alkaline medium, and further reaction of generated hydroxamate ions with Fe(III) in acidic medium, forming a violet complex. Product detection will be carried out by smartphone-based digital-image photometry associated to a free access application to convert the images to RGB values. The analytical performance of the microfluidic device will be critically evaluated in comparison to other literature methods and accuracy will be assessed in relation to the reference method based on mid-infrared spectroscopy.
