Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial condition characterized by hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, central fat deposition and insulin resistance. Its diagnosis varies according to the criteria used, reflecting its complexity. This syndrome significantly impacts public health and the economy, with estimates of a substantial prevalence in different populations. MetS increases the risk of coronary events, resulting in high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although the pathophysiology involved is complex, some factors, such as excessive production of various inflammatory cytokines, are implicated in the progression of the condition. The influence of endocrine variables, such as age at menarche and menopause, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and lifestyle habits on the development of MetS has conflicting data in the literature, and further research is needed. Objective: To explore the relationship between endocrine, demographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors in normoglycemic women and the diagnosis of MetS. Materials and methods: This study will be carried out in an outpatient endocrinology clinic in Bauru, São Paulo state, with normoglycemic women, with and without MS and over the age of 18. Data on these patients will be collected from the clinic's electronic medical records. MetS will be defined according to the NCEP-ATPIII criteria. The other data obtained will be analyzed as proposed by the authors and discussed on the basis of current literature. Expected results: We hope to evaluate the relationship between endocrine factors (age at menarche and menopause), demographic factors (age), socioeconomic factors (socioeconomic class and self-reported ethnicity), lifestyle (adherence to diet and physical activity), isolated or associated, with the occurrence of MetS in these patients.
