Abstract

Zirconia is widely used in dentistry for oral rehabilitation due to its high fracture toughness, mechanical strength and biocompatibility. The accumulation of microorganisms in the oral biofilm has been one of the reasons for failure in oral rehabilitations using ceramic materials. It is important that materials with antimicrobial agents in their composition can be used in prosthetic rehabilitation. Previous studies performed by our group with two glasses used as glazing materia, containing boron and silver in their composition, showed the antimicrobial action of boron glass (and less effective action of silver in the short-term) when applied on zirconia with the presence of cubic phase. The present study will be able to evaluate the immediate and long-term antimicrobial effect of boron and silver glasses applied as cover on zirconia 5Y-PSZ. 270 samples of zirconia 5Y-PSZ will be used. They will be divided in three groups: Group SE - no aging; Group E6 - with aging for six months; Group E12 - with aging for one year. The samples will be submitted these tests and analyses: Biaxial flexural strength, Roughness analysis, Counting of Colony Forming Unit (CFU), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Analysis of cell viability (MTT), Surface free energy (SFE) and Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). The analysis of qualitative data will be performed using scanning electron microscope; The Flexural strength data will be analyzed by Weibull analysis; The quantitative data will be evaluated for the constancy in errors variance and treated by adequate parametric and non-parametric tests (p<0.05).
