Abstract

We aim to investigate if performing eccentric contractions until muscle failure (ECC-F) following the occurence of concentric muscle failure (CON-F) enhances the adaptive neuromuscular adaptations conferred by traditional resistance training performed until CON-F. In a randomized intra-subject controlled trial, young healthy women will be submitted to two resistance training protocols, each with one of their lower-limbs: traditional resistance training until CON-F (TRAD) and resistance training with sets until CON-F followed by eccentric contractions performed until ECC-F. The loads of both exercises will be set as 9-12 repetition maximum (considering CON-F), and the training protocol will last for 10 weeks, with two weekly sessions consisting of six sets with two-minute rest intervals. The investigated exercise will be seated unilateral knee extensions. Muscle function (maximal and explosive strength) and body composition (muscle thickness and thigh circumference at different quadriceps lengths, muscle mass and fat mass) will be measured pior to and following the training intervention and compared between limbs and trhough time using two-way ANOVAs. Significance levels will be set as p 0.05.
