Abstract

Thunderclouds are electrically charged environments that can accelerate particles to relativistic speeds, leading to energetic phenomena such as Terristrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs)-brief bursts of gamma rays with energies in the tens of MeV. One proposed explanation for TGFs is the relativistic electron avalanche feedback mechanism. Our research focuses on identifying the conditions necessary for this mechanism to occur in real-world atmospheric conditions and comparing the resulting gamma-ray emissions with ground-based measurements. Using computational simulations, we'll assess the likelihood of backscattered particles initiating further cascades, a key aspect of the self-sustaining nature of the mechanism. While previous studies often assumed a uniform density profile, recent research suggests that density gradients significantly impact electronic avalanche dynamics, prompting a detailed investigation into their effects. The theoretical understanding will be used to assess the hypotheses of the origin mechanism of the Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes detected on the ground, together with multi-instrumental observations already underway by the FAPESP project 2023/03908-5 and NSF Award #2112709.
