Effect of oxygen supplementation on acid-base balance and recovery of capuchin monkeys (Sapajus sp.) chemically restrained with ketamine-midazolam

Abstract

Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus sp.) are Neotropical primates that occur naturally throughout Brazil. Due to the fragmentation of habitats due to human action, the trafficking of wild animals and the popularization of their creation as pets, the number of species in wild animal screening centers and private clinics, in addition to their maintenance under human care, is increasing. This scenario makes chemical containment necessary for adequate and safe handling of animals in clinical, surgical and diagnostic procedures. However, the harmful effects of the drugs used on the cardiorespiratory system raise the importance of transanesthetic monitoring and bring to light the discussion about the benefits of oxygen supplementation during chemical restraint of these animals. The present study therefore aims to evaluate the effects of oxygen therapy on cardiorespiratory parameters, acid-base balance and recovery of capuchin monkeys subjected to the ketamine-midazolam association. The animals included in the experiment will come from the Center for Management and Conservation of Wild Animals (CeMaCAS) of the Wildlife Division of the City of São Paulo, in the final phase of rehabilitation, awaiting allocation for release into the wild. In a prospective, randomized and crossover design, each animal will be restrained on two separate occasions, with a minimum interval of 15 days between them, in order to compose two groups: individuals supplemented with oxygen (GO2; n = 9) and individuals kept in room air (GAR; n = 9). On both occasions, the animals will be physically restrained with the puçá and later chemically with doses of 10 mg/kg of ketamine and 0.5 mg/kg of midazolam, administered intramuscularly. Blood will be collected from the femoral artery for blood gas analysis in two moments: the first collection 20 minutes after the observation of the lateral/sternal decubitus and the second collection 40 minutes after the observation of the decubitus, with the beginning or not of supplementation with oxygen will occur 10 minutes after the first collection. In addition, cardiorespiratory parameters and the quality of anesthetic recovery will be monitored. From the present study, we intend to evaluate the contribution of oxygen supplementation in the management of chemical restraint of capuchin monkeys.
