Abstract

This proposal is associated with the postdoctoral project titled "Social Pathologies and Inequality: Social Philosophy, Redistribution, and Recognition." The project investigates the social pathologies which reinforce inequality in contemporary societies. During my stay at Humboldt University, I aim at addressing a foundational question for the rest of the proposed discussion of my postdoctoral research and the first question presented in my postdoctoral project: Is a grammar of the redistributive paradigm also necessary, or can the theory of recognition alone accomplish the task of discussing all matters of justice in contemporary unequal societies? My main objective is to address and contribute to the solution of the enduring problem of the best model of critical theory to promote justice. I will do so by reconstructing contemporary critical theorists' understanding of equality and by thinking it in dialogue with the Latin American context, especially that of Brazil. My postdoctoral project had already included a period of BEPE as an integral part of the research. With a few small adjustments to the approach and the change of host institution, as explained in the text, this proposal aligns with the original postdoctoral project and can significantly contribute to it.
