Trajectories of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity/Impulsivity Disorder (ADHD) in childhood and adolescence and associated outcomes in adulthood

Abstract

This research project aims to include a Brazilian sample in research on ADHD, including the specificities of the population of a middle-income country. Thus, listing sociocultural, economic and environmental factors different from those used in the studies cited in the text below, typical of developed countries. The participants in this study are children and adolescents between 6 and 14 years old from 57 schools (22 in Porto Alegre and 35 in São Paulo). Their data are from the Brazilian High Risk Cohort for Mental Conditions (Salum et al., 2015). These patients, after an initial screening, were separated into two subsamples from the initial sample, one being random (n = 958) intended to be representative of the population and one high risk (n = 1,554), that is, a subsample of children at increased risk for disorders that was based on the presence of early psychiatric symptoms and high family burden of psychopathology assessed by interview. Based on this Cohort, the present study seeks to analyze the association between the different trajectories of ADHD throughout development and the outcomes measured, also comparing the outcomes between individuals with persistent ADHD vs. remitting and between different risk levelsThe results of this research will significantly contribute to listing factors correlated with ADHD, such as genetic influences, level of education, mother's depression, family social class, childhood abuse and disruptive disorder.
