Abstract

Understanding the causes and consequences of new uses of ironic discourse in cyberspace, as well as checking the conceptual limits of metalinguistics proposed by M. Bakhtin on this front, are central aspects of the project proposed here. The guiding research question of this project is: are the post and meta-irony proposed by interactions in cyberspace in fact distinct from the current meaning of irony? To analyze the material that motivates the research, composed of ten utterances collected in a discussion forum about internet memes (The Philosopher's Meme), we will be guided by the works of Bakhtin and the Circle, which allow us to observe the world in its historical, cultural and social instances, starting from language as an organizing axis of worldviews, marked semantically-axiologically in discourse - within human activities. The selected utterances are temporally located within the last two decades, the period of greatest activity of the so-called generation Z in virtual spaces, this being the age group that proposes the supposed new uses of irony.
