Abstract

Canine obesity is a growing problem, which affects the health and quality of life of animals, in addition to representing a challenge in veterinary medicine. This project aims to investigate lipid metabolites in obese dogs during the weight loss process, with the aim of identifying biomarkers that can assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of animal metabolism. The study will be conducted at the Dog and Cat Nutrology Research Center at FMVZ/USP, involving 10 obese adult dogs. Hematological and biochemical analyzes will be carried out to evaluate liver and kidney functions, in addition to a weight loss program with a controlled diet and physical activity. The methodology includes lipidomic analysis through mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography, seeking to understand the biochemical mechanisms involved in modulating metabolism during weight loss. Metabolic and biochemical data will be collected before and after the intervention, and statistical analysis will be performed using specific software to identify significant correlations between metabolites and weight loss. The results are expected to elucidate the identification of metabolic biomarkers, for the creation of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, providing personalized and more effective treatments. In this way, this project will benefit both society and companion animals, through the possible promotion of improved health and well-being, in addition to combating canine obesity, through healthier management practices.
