Abstract

This research internship project is part of the ongoing doctoral research 'Racism and homophobia in memories and narratives of the future: an intergenerational study with black gay men'. This overseas research aims to deepen the use of participatory methodologies to explore black gay men's memories of racism and homophobia and perspectives on the future, with a focus on their experiences of resistance and confrontation in the British context. Using a qualitative approach based on decolonial and queer studies and black and feminist thought, the study involves observational procedures in spaces of sociability of the black LGBT community and in-depth interviews with black gay men, combining participatory strategies such as photovoice and letter writing to amplify the voices of the subjects and promote a collaborative approach. It is hoped that this research will contribute to broadening the debate, analysis and interventions around black gay men's memories and narratives, as well as contributing to the collective and collaborative construction of spaces for discussion and dialogue around their experiences. It also aims to provide academic partnerships that problematise new forms of analysis and intervention that allow for the expansion of participatory methodologies in studies of racism and homophobia.
