Abstract

The impact of the Industrial Revolution on society is notorious, especially withregard to its production models and urban spaces, changing the way people travelled, as wellas the industrial production of construction materials and building techniques. The start andexpansion of the railways and their entire structure, linked to the Industrial Revolution, had an impact on socio-spatial spheres, especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the stateof São Paulo. However, its marks still mould the landscape and occupy significant spaces in social relations, including the fields of memory and materiality. The aim of this research projectis to carry out a field survey of the French tiles found in the former repair and assembly workshops of the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro (CPEF) in the city of Campinas. It is hoped that by analysing them, it will be possible to detect important information about these railway buildings, such as (1) the date and place of production of the French tiles and (2) the means of production and the workforce employed in this activity. In order to achieve this goal, the research line of industrial archaeology and architectural archaeology will be used, detecting the constructive material remains found in the field, collecting the materials and cataloguing them, so that the information can be worked on in an organised and systematic way.
