Abstract

Within the time frame of our thematic project (1948-1978), cultural journalism occupied a significant space in Brazilian periodicals, not only disseminating information about artistic and cultural agendas but also fostering debate and cultivating new audiences for modern and contemporary art. The creation of Literary Supplements or Cultural Sections in the Brazilian press dates back to this period, helping cultural journalism establish itself as an interpretive platform for the culture and thought of the time, while also promoting closer engagement with literature and the arts in general. In the art columns and cultural supplements, information was published about events in Brazil and abroad, contextualizing exhibitions, artworks, and collections of art objects, as well as contributing to the promotion of certain artists and movements. The newspapers Estado de São Paulo and Folha de São Paulo did not have regular columnists, but they frequently published articles and features of cultural interest, signed by critics such as Aracy Amaral and Geraldo Ferraz in the case of the former, and José Geraldo Vieira in the case of the latter. This undergraduate research project will survey and analyze articles on modern and contemporary art published in both newspapers between the years 1948 and 1978, focusing on those related to international traveling exhibitions held at MAM Rio, MAM SP, MASP, and MAC USP, as well as major biennials and recurring exhibitions of broad impact.
