Abstract

The aim of the project is to study the emergent behavior of synthetic quantum systems that are now experimentally available, such as ultra-cold atomic gases. These systems are inherently many body, and they can be confined in one or two dimensions to enhance their quantum mechanical nature. We seek to understand their dynamical properties once they are brought out of thermodynamical equilibrium by external driving fields or continuous measurements, as well as by coupling them to an environment that produces dissipative effects. These conditions may lead to stationary or dynamical phases that have no equivalent at equilibrium, and whose properties might be useful for future metrological and computational purposes. (AU)
