Abstract

The distal colonic microbiota, often dominated by proteolytic bacteria resulting from high-protein diets, is associated with inflammation and an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Fermentation of prebiotic fibers promotes the growth of beneficial genera and the production of short-chain fatty acids, thereby modulating this environment. However, low molecular weight oligosaccharides, despite their superior prebiotic potential, are rapidly fermented in the proximal colon, impairing delivery to the distal region. To address this, we recently developed a nanoencapsulation strategy that entraps pectic oligomers within high molecular weight pectin matrices via ionic gelation. While effective, this method lacks reproducible batch control and is not scalable. Therefore, this project proposes the use of microfluidic technology to produce pectin nanoparticles, enabling precise control over their architecture and scalable synthesis, thereby creating a modular platform for targeted colonic modulation. Beyond enhancing prebiotic effects, this approach valorizes agro-industrial residues, adheres to the principles of the bioeconomy, and supports the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
