Abstract

Quantum dot (QD) structures exhibit features in transport or optical spectroscopy that indicate full three-dimensional confinement of carriers. Electrons and holes in the QD can occupy only a given set of states with discrete energies, as in an atom. QD's can thus be used to do "atomic physics" experiments in the solid state. The advantage of a QD is that it provides a different energy scale to atoms which can be easily varied over a wide range of parameters. These systems are ideal for theoretical investigations, where the interactions between light and matter can be studied in a fully controlled environment and with excellent probes. In this project we propose to investigate phenomena such as those observed in atomic physics (where atoms are placed in resonant cavities, either alone or as small groups), but replacing the atoms with quantum dots. The project will be focused on the following two goals: 1) Cavity mode resonance with single and multiple excitons in quantum dots; 2) Energy transfer and carrier hopping in coupled quantum dots. It is more than a simple continuation of my doctorate research, where I study the effects of an external classical AC field on semiconductor structures. The conditions prevalent in resonant cavities make the proposed work a necessary extension. (AU)
