Abstract

The dynamic characteristics of the magnetic bearings are strongly influenced by the PID controller parameters of the control circuit. Thus, in this research work a theoretical analysis of the application viability of an active control system using a magnetic bearing as non-contact actuator for reducing rotor vibrations as a function of the PID filter parameters will be developed. The analysis will be accomplished regarding the actuator positions respect to the point where the exciting forces are acting onto the rotor. A feedback control system to attenuate synchronous and sub-synchronous frequency vibrations will be employed. It is known that the magnetic actuators are limited to the maximum magnetic force which they produce and the electric current (saturation current). Therefore, the viability analysis will be based on the performance, electric current and control force needed to be applied by the actuator for reducing the rotor vibration levels considerably. The analysis will accomplished using rotor models developed by the impedance matrix method.
