The objective of this project is to use electronic structure theoretical methods to study nanomaterials and new advanced materials. We will emphasize diluted magnetic semiconductors, seeking applications in spintronics, and also nanostructured materials based on metals and semiconductors. We will focus on ways to manipulate their properties through quantum confinement (nanostructures) and by engineering the Fermi energy position. The relevance of this study is not only to know more about new materials, but also on getting a better knowledge of processes involved in quantum confinement. Besides the miniaturization of devices, it is also important to know what the new properties in these size regimes are. The chosen method to study these problems is Density Functional Theory (DFT) and, when necessary, we will also look for other methodologies. The beneficiary of this project will be hosted at the Universidade Federal do ABC, and will have a fundamental participation in the Jovem Pesquisador project to which this project is vinculated. The holder will also have an important participation in the Graduate program in “Nanociências e Materiais Avançados”; that is projected for this university. The recently created UFABC is still forming its academic and research structure, and postdocs will certainly have a very important role in its development. (AU)
