Abstract In the last years, the so-called f(R) gravity theories have attracted a lot of attention due to possibility of construct cosmological models capable of explain different astrophysical data available in the literature without that we need to postulate exotic forms of matter and energy that, invariably, have unexpected physical properties as, for example, energy conditions violation and negative pressure. These theories are especially usefuls as alternative to dark energy scenarios, because they "naturally" exhibit a phase of accelerating expansion without introducing new degrees of freedom. In order to construct realistic cosmological models we need take into account diverse particularities. From the theoretical viewpoint, for example, we need to check if these theories are cosmologically viable in the senses that are capable of producing all phases of cosmological evolution. From the theoretical viewpoint however, it is important to look whether these theories are indeed compatible with different kinds of currently available cosmological data thus constraining the parameters of these theories. In this project we intend to explore widely the applicability of the f(R) gravity theories using the best cosmic microwave background (CMB) data available, produced by the WMAP satellite, as well as a number of galaxy and large scale structure catalogs (e.g., SDSS, APM, 2MASS). Particularly, the current f(R) models do not consider the possibility of using secondary anisotropies or polarization data to place constraints in these theories. This can be an interesting research path, since, starting 2010, the Planck satellite will release the highest CMB datasets, including secondary anisotropies and polarization, in 8 different frequencies.
