Abstract

During the last years, the study of detection limits and selectivity of polymeric membranes ion-selective electrodes (ISE) have suffered considerable advances in a way that potentiometry applied to trace-analysis reached a comparable performance to the more advanced analytical methods. The detection limits around nanomolar concentrations are obtained, amongst other strategies, through constant maintenance of the primary ion low activity in the internal reference solution. However, the traditional arrangement with internal solution is disadvantageous, being important the attainment of easy manufacture reliable sensors, capable of work in any analytical condition. The solid-state ion-selective sensors are white of special interest in the field of potentiometry once they are free of such limitations. The basic characteristic of such configuration is the presence of a solid transducer, in substitution to the liquid intermediate electrolyte phase. In this sense, the use of new materials as conducting polymers has become a very useful component in the construction of solid-state sensors due to their mixing character of ionic and electronic conductivity. Recent researches point that the detection limit of this kind of sensor also can be diminished to trace-levels (g kg-1). The present project objectives the development and evaluation of all-solid-state potentiometric sensors using new materials such as conducting polymers, acting as transducer or as the recognition element, aiming the detection of low concentrations. The foreseen activities also aim the development of low cost analytical methodologies using the developed sensors in flow analysis systems, for the monitoring of environmental parameters. (AU)
