Abstract

The project is dedicated to do a systematization on Goethe's opposition symbol/allegory, as well as identifying the linguistic and philosophical fundaments of this opposition. After this theorical research we intend to analyse Goethe own fictional work in which the symbol (in Goethe's definition) plays a determinant role. Finally, the third moment of our research intends to analyse the relation between Goethe's concept of symbol and the ideas of French symbolism, from the end of XIX century, as a way to investigate the survival capacity of Goethe's concept after the caesure imposed by poetical modernity.
