Abstract

Among the chemical systems employed as model to the study of complex properties, the ones based on the chemistry of bromate are certainly the most extensively studied and the famous Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is the most well known example. However, problems such as the formation of gaseous and solid products in the course of the reaction and the presence of short-lived oscillations under batch conditions are very common and, in some cases, compromise the use of some of these systems. The goal of the present project is the study of the dynamic behavior of a variant of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction: the bromate/dual substrate/dual catalyst hypophosphite/acetone/dual catalyst system. Hypophosphite and 1,4-cyclohexanedione will be used as substrates, and ferroin and manganese as catalysts, and the complete system (BrO3-/H2PO2-/CHD/Mn(II)-ferroin) will be studied under batch conditions. Temporal symmetry breaking will be studied in a stirred reactor by means of the simultaneous records of the potential changes of platinum and bromide selective electrode and spectrophotometrically in the UV-vis region. Special attention will be devoted to the mapping of the parameter region where oscillatory kinetic occur.
