Abstract

Unilateral hearing loss is featured by a loss decrease in one ear only and occurs, predominantly, in men, presenting etiologies like mumps, ototoxicity, meningitis, PAIR, chickenpox, cranioencephalic traumatism, and indefinite causes. In the presence of environmental noise, individuals bearing an unilateral loss find more difficulties than normal individuals to understand speech, and besides, spatial localization of sound sources becomes compromised. Problems caused by sensorial deprivation may be minimized through the usage of the hearing aid. There are many instruments to assess satisfaction levels and benefits for hearing aid users. Due to the scarcity of research referring to hearing loss, it is the aim of this work to measure subjectively and objectively benefit and satisfaction of individuals that use a unilateral hearing aid. Method: work will be performed at the Clinic of Phonoaudiology of the Department of Phonoaudiology of FOB/USP, Bauru; casuistic will be comprised by 30 individuals with a diagnosis of unilateral hearing loss, 15 to 60 years old, effectively bearing an hearing aid for more than six (6) months. For this study it will be employed the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) developed as a product of an international workshop about self-assessment measurements in hearing rehabilitation (Cox 2000, 2002). For the objective assessment of benefit there will be performed measurements of insertion gain, an acoustic measurement determined by the register of pressure sound level at the external auditory meatus with and without the hearing aid. Results will be elaborated through statistical tests referring to proposed objectives. (AU)
