Abstract

The present postdoctoral project involves the potential use of DOSY techniques to separate the NMR spectra of complex mixtures of isomers using micellar solutions of surfactants as separation agents.The initial aim of this project will be to study the effects of surfactants on diffusion-weighted NMR spectra of mixtures of isomers of differing polarities. The first question is: to what extent are the changes in diffusion properties on the addition of surfactant to a solution determined by solute polarity? Subsidiary questions include: what other properties affect solute-micelle interactions? can differences in solute-micelle interactions be rationalised and predicted, for example using molecular modelling? Can reverse micelles be exploited to separate the spectra of mixtures in nonpolar solvents? Is it possible to use 'NMR-silent' surfactants (e.g. perfluorooctanoate) to separate proton spectra? (AU)
