Abstract

This thesis will show the process of emergence, consolidation and transformation of the national indigenous movement during the 1980's and 1990's, based on Alvaro Tukano's narrative which emerged, took root and transformed through the process of conformation within the movement itself. Alvaro Tukano's narrative is used here as a way to inform this research which shows the ethnography of his experience. It analyses what is narrated, which relationships are revealed and how the association established with authors along this paper explain social processes and the alterity that forms the question of the indigenous peoples in the country. Moreover, it shows evidence that Alvaro Tukano, when writing his own version of the history of the indigenous peoples in the country, demonstrated how his apropriation of imposed non-indigenous cultural norms and conventions affirmed his cultural heritage and the fight for his rights through his own process of transformation in response to the changes he was exposed to. Through the examination of various narratives about the emergence of the national movement of the indigenous peoples, field research and extensive review of existing literature, I will critically evaluate the course of action that consolidated his position as an indigenous leader, and later led to him being publically ostracised. Furthermore, this thesis will explore the relationships and interactions amongst people, institutions and politics tha reveal the questions about indigenous politics and policy making in the country (AU)
