Abstract

Augmentative and alternative communication systems enable the development of language and communication skills of children with disabilities and complex communication needs. Thus, teachers of Early Childhood Education, with training, can provide support in augmentative and alternative communication, contribute to the receptive and expressive language processes of children, and teach educational content, care and play. This research had the aim to analyze the mediation process in education in an augmentative and alternative communication intervention program in early childhood education and continuing teacher education; and develop and implement a proposal of strategies, resources and educational activities through children's songs adapted to augmentative and alternative communication systems. The participants were seven students with disabilities and complex communication needs of a special class of Early Childhood Education, a teacher, two teaching assistants, the researcher and three classes of regular education. Data collection took place between May and December, 2010. For the development of this research, a 3-tier Alternative Communication Program was applied. In the first phase, the school curriculum and the class pedagogical planning were identified. Based on that, the teacher was introduced to systematic guidance concerning language and communication, Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems as well as the links such systems have with communication issues and the acquisition of literacy. In the second phase, by means of interviews with the teacher, the school’s routine and the students’ abilities were identified. The third step consisted in the creation and adaptation of resources through Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems. On that phase, three children’s songs were selected with a view to the teacher’s pedagogical planning. The activities were implemented through collaborative work. For the span of the interventions, assisted evaluations also took place and the teacher made a registry of school activities related to each song’s theme. The data were collected in audio recordings, video footage, registry book and through the filling out of protocols. This study focus on analyzing data from the footage and the procedural reviews. We established categories and subcategories and performed quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results indicated that the intervention program in early childhood education delivered needed support for augmentative and alternative communication and language input aided by the strategies used in educational activities for children both with and without disabilities; the intervention program led to the continuing education of the teacher on the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems, and the teacher concluded that the program was important for their training and pedagogical activities. Our conclusion is that preschool children have very particular specificities and that, therefore, a partnership between regular education teachers and special education teachers is needed so that there can be found support for augmentative and alternative communication for children with disabilities and complex communication needs.
