Abstract

Mammary tumors are highly prevalent in bitches and present biological behavior for women, making the bitch a model for the comparative study. In women, the use of serological markers for prognostic determination is well established, being a useful method for monitoring patients since his diagnosis. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of carcinogenic antigen (CEA) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in bitches with mammary tumors, with the aim of using those as diagnostic and prognostic markers in these animals. For that, sera from 35 bitches were used and separated into three groups; G1 (n = 10) control group; G2 (n = 15) animals with mammary carcinomas with no lymph node metastasis and G3 (n = 5) animals with mammary carcinomas with lymph node metastasis. Markers were measured by ELISA method. Results regarding the presence of markers in sera of each patient, its relation with tumor behavior and clinical-pathological variables were analyzed with Tukey test with a significance level of 5%. Results showed that values of CEA (p <0.0001) and AFP (p = 0.0004) were significantly higher in bitches with mammary tumors. In addition, CEA values significantly increases in bitches with metastasis (p <0.0001) and larger than 3.0 cm tumors (p = 0.0091). There was a significant increase in AFP in intact bitches (p = 0.0307). There was no significance among histological grade, necrosis, ulceration and inflammation for both markers. CEA was efficient in detecting the presence of mammary carcinomas and may be a promising marker for the follow-up of female dogs with mammary tumors. Future studies, including follow-up of patients with serial measures should be performed to include these markers in the clinical routine of veterinary oncology. (AU)
