Abstract

Along its three chapters, this study aims to present and discuss the characteristics of instrumentation and orchestration of Antonio Carlos Gomes, proposing a theoretical corpus on his contribution to the subject at a time of little innovation of the orchestral forces in Brazil and even in the Italian peninsula. The first chapter deals with the aspects of orchestration in Brazil, addressing the main orchestral effective models in use in the capital of the empire, the teaching methodology of the discipline and the way Gomes¿ teachers used to teach of musical composition. In the next chapter, the study investigates the same topic of orchestration in the context of Milan, presenting the main teachers of Gomes and what came to us from the didactic employed at that time. In this chapter it was necessary to investigate the Italian tradition and some of the major influences of the grand opéra in the field of instrumentation, in order to then analyze the values employed by Gomes in his orchestral writing. In addition, we discuss the changes in major Italian orchestras to fit the model of the grand opéra stimulated by Alberto Mazzucato, which was Gomes¿ teacher, and the discussions raised about cimbasso instrument. These important topics allowed us to go deeper in the orchestral universe of Gomes. The last chapter deals with the results of these changes in the education of Carlos Gomes as orchestrator, depicting and discussing his peculiarities through the analysis of his preludes and symphonies and revealing marks of his orchestral style through the various procedures adopted by the artist (AU)
