Abstract

The thesis herein presented - financed by FAPESP under process No. 2013/19556-9 - is in the scope of "Images, Geographies and Education Networks" and is focused on a set of photographs and videos by photographers and video-artists that have chosen the city of São Paulo as subject and as ethical and esthetical problem. Our purpose is to think how the image of the city assumes the centrality in the construction of its spaciality. By these means, we intend to reflect about the visuality and the esthetical education of the individuals as a fundamental aspect of the comprehension of reality. Thinking image as a means for composing the notion of space implies emphasizing the space as volatile and as a result of matches and mismatches, as the photographer Doreen Massey points out. Each photograph or video is, therefore, a "minor geography", that is, an alternative version of space and of city. Such images, several of them targeted on the city of São Paulo, if aggregated, could not allow us to compose a totaling/totalizing image of the city. This means demonstrating that the visible is susceptible of being thought, and that art, as Manoel de Barros would think, proposes us other ways to see or transsee the world. Thus, based on the "work bench" notion presented by Didi-Huberman from the work of Aby Warburg, we propose how the match and mismatch of images build a way of thinking about the images. This thinking make relations slide and dislocate; in our particular case, it disllocates and deranges the standard relations between truth, reality, image and space, such as the relations between image, writing, and the ethical and esthetical meanings of the space. All following essays seek to build meanings for what we call landscape-word, operational notion with which we aim to think simultaneously the images, the writing, the urban landscapes and the city of São Paulo, creating (sub)versions of meanings for the words that seek to say (about) the space and (about) the lanscape from the art works laid on our "work bench". The relation between image and writing, thought as an impossible translation, assumes the centrality in different sections of this thesis, aiming to point out the difficulties of apprehending the image and the space from the writing, but, simultaneously, the potentiality of the writing being the fabrication of other (infinite) possible images (AU)
