Abstract

Machado de Assis and Giacomo Leopardi are recognized especially as novelists and poet, respectively, and have been the subject of comparative studies for at least fifty years. Our research is based on these results, but we explore the literary character of Machadian and Leopardian prose through philosophical relations pertinent to the representations of human character by the manifestations of impulses in short works. In this way, the work investigates the moral dimension and the literary matter in a comparative analysis of the Operette morali (writings of 1824 to 1832 by Giacomo Leopardi) and of the Machadian tales Testamentary Disposition (of the book Miscellaneous Papers, of 1882), Fulano, The Lapse (of Undated Stories, 1884), Life! (from 1896), Canary thoughts (from Collected Pages, 1899), Evolution (from Relics from an Old House, 1906) and The Wallet (published in 1884, and collected in the "Other Stories" section of Complete work). We explore affinities in the treatment of human reactions in the midst of various situations of emotional exigency, as well as the balance, sometimes called irony, from the point of view of stories, novels and dialogues, which emphasizes the choice of genres.
