Abstract

This study analyzes the trajectory of technical development of banks in the 21st century in articulation with the process of contemporary modernization. Our main focus is the analysis of the emergence of a new banking technical paradigm, defined by innovation processes in the area of information technology and articulated to the development of technical networks in the territory, and its repercussions on the spatial logics and strategies of the banks in the installation of their fixed networks. In this sense, what guides the construction of this work is the investigation of the nexuses between the expansion of the use and the investments in the channels of banking self-service (internet banking and mobile banking) and its repercussions in the redefinition of both the topology and the rates of expansion of the networks agencies, PAE and PAB, considering the important reduction of installed capacity of the banks due to the new technical possibilities of carrying out the banking activity in the country. This correlation is best expressed in our study on the spatial strategies of the banks in the city of Campinas/SP between the years of 1980 and 2016, so the analyzes of the transformations in the fixed networks in this city express, for a side, the technical development trajectory of the banks and the changes in their spatial logics and, on the other hand, help us to understand the specificities of the banks' strategies in function of the dynamics of the city. The analysis of these strategies reveals two complementary dimensions: a) that of the unequal banking topology in the city, which is transformed and is selectively materialized according to the dynamics of structuring of light and opaque spaces in the city, as well as redefines them; b) and the inequalities in access to the new banking technologies, which are oriented both by the technical densities of the space and the levels of income, which contributes to the consolidation of a markedly unequal city (AU)
