Abstract

Aims: i. To assess the psychometric properties of the Three-factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-18), of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and of the Individual Lifestyle Profile (PEVI) applied to sample of university students; ii. to verify the impact of the lifestyle, of the negative affectivity and of the demographic characteristics on eating behavior dimensions among university students. Methods: A total of 1,109 students participated (mean age=20.9 [standard-deviation=2.7] years; 65.7% females). The psychometric properties of the instruments applied to sample were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis. The convergent and discriminant validities as well as reliability were investigated. The multi-group analysis was used to evaluate factorial invariance among independent samples. After the fit of instruments‘ factorial models, a structural model with the hypothetical paths was elaborated and tested considering structural equation modeling techniques. In this context, the impact of lifestyle, of the negative affectivity and of demographic characteristics on eating behavior was estimated. Results: The original factorial model of the TFEQ-18 presented adequate fit to the data. Regarding DASS-21, it was necessary the exclusion of one item because of the low factorial weight. The PEVI had an adequate fit to data, however, the convergent validity and reliability were limited. Strong invariance was verified among independent sample for all instruments. In structural model, the lifestyle had a significant impact on the negative affectivity. The negative affectivity had a mediator effect between the lifestyle and the eating behavior. The demographic characteristics such as sex, age, thoughts about dropping out of college and anthropometric weight status were relevant in evaluation of eating behavior. Conclusion: The TFEQ-18, the DASS-21 and the PEVI presented adequate psychometric properties to sample. The negative affectivity, the lifestyle and the demographic characteristics had impact on eating behavior of the university students. These results reinforce the importance of evaluation of emotional and cognitive aspects in context of individual‘s eating. (AU)
