Abstract

The present Master Dissertation starts from the assumption that it is possible to derive from the theoretical works of Guy Debord ¿ and more specifically, from his book The society of the spectacle ¿ a critique of the modern category of the subject that has, in some senses, anticipated reflections later formulated by the contemporary Marxist strand known as Value criticism (Wertkritik). The main clue that sustains this hypothesis is the residual use made by Debord of notions borrowed from Freudian Psychoanalysis, specially of unconsciousness in its broadest sense, to think about the concept of image in its relation to the idea of automatic subject that was developed in the context of Value criticism. Freud¿s writings work therefore as an auxiliary layer for the interpretation of a subjectivity that is being proposed here as characteristic of the society of the spectacle, with special attention being paid to his diagnosis of voyeurism/exhibitionism and the category of the ego ideal. Building upon this theoretical cornerstone, a diagnosis of the times is produced and used in order to interpret two contemporary phenomena: the mall, and the Web 2.0, with its algorithmic technology, focusing on Facebook. The work is divided into four chapters: in the first, I make an exegetic and philological journey through the work of Debord, mapping his main influences and trying to understand what is his implicit idea of subject; in the second one, I seek to demonstrate in what sense this idea of subject foreshadows the one developed by Value criticism and how Psychoanalysis can help to consolidate it; the third chapter consists on ethnographic remarks formulated from experiences in the Parque D. Pedro shopping, in an attempt to put in dialogue the Debordian notion of contemplation and the social voyeurism that is typical of such an environment; in the fourth chapter, I explore the concept of the integrated form of spectacle (formulated by Debord in Comments on the society of the spectacle) and how techniques of state surveillance and marketing strategies are connected in social networks, creating a specific subjectivity that is unable to settle boundaries between the inner space of Ego and the hyperstimulating space of contemporary society. In the conclusion, I present some speculations about/around the Freudian concept of the death drive and recover the confluence between Debord and Freud with regards to the pair consciousness-unconsciousness (AU)
