Abstract

This work aims to understand not only the reflexes that the formation of new urban morphologies has on the process of spatial redistribution of the population, but also how the population dynamics and specifically the spatial mobility of the population can show new forms of organization territorial. In this context, the formation of the São Paulo City-Region was analyzed in light of the population movements in three periods through the demographic census data of 1991, 2000 and 2010. The city-regions in this study relate to the new stage of capital accumulation, the new territorial division of labor and processes, such as the so-called productive restructuring. This new urban form is characterized by unlimited territorial extension, by having diffuse territorial limits and by bringing together, through a space of flows, several other agglomerations, cities of different functions and population sizes. The City- Region of São Paulo comprises 173 municipalities that are distributed in five metropolitan regions, two urban agglomerations and one micro-region. Therefore, the integration of this morphology that is urban-regional by nature was analyzed through population flows, especially migration and pendular mobility. Through the characteristics of those who circulate in this new territoriality, the structures that conform the various socio-spatial scales that compose the cityregion (mainly the intra-metropolitan and intra-regional scales), as well as the structure of incentives and constraints are analyzed that make each individual or not at each of these scales. The results show that the process of spatial redistribution of the population, with an epicenter in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, towards the agglomerates located within a 150km radius of this metropolis, is still present and intense. It was observed that the integration between the urban agglomerates that conform this morphology through the population flows, especially through the commuting movements, has been growing year by year, which shows that the city-region is still a reality under construction. The characterization of the individuals that circulate in this new urban form and in each one of their socio-spatial scales, showed that those who perform intra-regional movements are more aged, educated, inserted in special sectors of the economy and have occupations higher than those that move in the intrametropolitan space, fact that raised what could be the structure of incentives and constraints that preponderate in each one of these socio-spatial scales (AU)
