| Abstract | |
In this work we investigate the relationship between games and indeterminate music, to understand how the game elements relate to this musical practice. To this end, we consult the literature in the areas of philosophy, social sciences and game design for definitions and concepts of games, in order to form a broad panorama of this activity. We present a historical context about indeterminate music related to contemporary music, discussing the notion of indeterminacy that characterizes it. We discuss the relationship between games and indeterminate music based on primordial game elements, defined according to the consulted authors, paying attention to the similarities, differences, and particularities regarding the way in which each element is used and considered in this musical practice. The primordial game elements considered in this work are fun and pleasure, game space, objectives, mechanics and rules, action, challenges, conflicts and competition, representation, strategies and attitudes, results. We analyze three pieces of indeterminate music of our authorship, based on the same elements, observing in detail how they are structured and how they influence the performer's experience and the audience's enjoyment. The discussion of the results points to the approximation of indeterminate music and play essentially in relation to the following elements: the construction based on mechanics and rules, the challenges and conflicts and the uncertainty of results (AU) | |
