Abstract

Studies about anti-heretical repression have focused, mainly, on normative and judicial sources. However, there is another category of documents yet poorly studied, one which played a very important role in giving scriptural and patristic legitimacy to the capital punishment of heretics: the treaties of refutation of heresies. This doctoral thesis analyses the conception of persecution and vindicta against heretics, focusing on the punishment of death in the anti-heretical opuscule of the Friar Preacher Moneta of Cremona, considering biblical and patristic arguments as well as heresiological methods when Inquisition was at its birth. The research showed that the Dominican polemicist, due to his training as a preacher, continued the polemical tradition on the subject, which was mainly Augustinian, offering a broader and more systematized exegesis in favor of the death penalty of heretics and other wrongdoers. The study concludes that the promotion of vindicta against heretics was a relevant matter in anti-heretical preaching during the early years of the inquisitorial practice, because, through biblical models, images and episodes, the lawful character of repressive and punitive measureswas reinforced, allowing the ecclesiastical agents to apply them with the help of secular authorities.
