Abstract

The work of the portuguese playwright Gil Vicente (1465 - 1536) was transmitted through chappbooks and two editions, one from 1562 and the other from 1586, of a book entitled Compilação de todas as obras de Gil Vicente. Despite the fact that both editions were revised by the portuguese Inquisition, the second one suffered several and notorious amendments. Looking at the 1586 edition of Compilação as a historical document marked by the portuguese Inquisition censorious process, the main goal of this doctors degree research is to make a philological-discursive case study of such editorial process. Therefore, with the Textual Criticism (BLÉCUA, 2001; CAMBRAIA, 2005; SPAGGIARI E PERUGI, 2003) and Critical Discourse Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2009; VOLÓCHINOV, 2017; FOUCAULT, 2014 [1970]; e GONÇALVES-SEGUNDO, 2011, 2018) as methodological bases, the following tasks were carried out: 1. The investigation of Gil Vicente and his work, the tipographic production and the portuguese Inquisition in Portugal in the XVI century; 2. Selection, based on the work of Freire (1944), and colation of the most amended texts in the 1586 edition in comparison to the 1562; 3. Double classification of the substantive variants; 4. philological and critical-discursive analysis of those variants, taking into consideration the censorious motives, its editorial moves and, among the orders of discourse, how world experiences are represented, there is, how specific discourses (ideational metafunction) emerge of or from them. The facsimiled editions of the two referred copies of the Compilação available on the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal were used, along with the critical and facsimiled edition led by Camões (2002) and by the center of theater studies of the university of Lisbon (CET, 2010), as support material. Therefore, we found 1145 total variants, among which, the blasphemous motivation totalized 506 variants (44.19%); the scandalous, 433 variants (37.81%); the superstitious 111 variants (9.69%); and the classical one, 95 variants (8.29%). Most of it (1115) occurred by suppression (97.37%), followed by replacement (30 variants - 2.62%). The first two censorial categories constitute taboo and that the amendments on them seek to preserve two pillars of power and the conservative ideology of the Church: its dogmas and what underlies them; and its internal functionalism. On the other hand, superstitions have not been as much targeted as the previous ones where they speak pejoratively about those who believe or practice them, and amendments occur only because their critical locations coexist with more controversial ones.
