Abstract

The main objective of this master's project is to perform a study about the 1586 edition of the Compilação de todas as obras de Gil Vicente and its relation with the inquisitorial censorship. Therefore, the following steps will be taken: 1) research about the influences of the inquisition on literary production, including the printing process, in the sixteenth century Portugal; 2) selection and comparison of the most altered plays on the 1586 edition in contrast with the 1562 edition (wich was made by Gil Vicente's son) and with the chapbooks of 1517 (Auto da Barca do Inferno) and 1523 (Farsa de Inês Pereira), published while the author was still alive; 3) collection of substantive variants (lexical and syntactical) and 4) variants analysis, considering the censorship concerns and its interferences on the construction and stablishment of the text. For these porpuses, we will use the facsimile editions of the two aforementioned editions of the compilação available on the Portugal National Library's website, and, also, as support, the edition conducted by Camões (2002). The theoric-methodological bases are those of Textual Critic, History and Literary Critic. (AU)
