Abstract

The subject of study in this dissertation is the portrait attributed to Paris Bordon (1500- 1571) which is kept in the Museum of Art of São Paulo. The museum identifies the painting with the title "Portrait of Alvise Contarini (?)" and dates the work between 1525 and 1550. The work is inserted into the context of Venetian Renaissance painting and for some time many scholars assigned it to Tiziano. Among its characteristics it stands out the involving atmosphere of light and shadow, the expressive look of the model facing the observer and the presence of an architectural niche all'antica, where the figure is inserted. The model holds a table clock that may convey a wide range of meanings, which give the work a symbolic and an emblematic character. The identity of the portrayed remained uncertain, although the museum has accepted the hypothesis of considering it Alvise Contarini. This work proposes a comprehensive study on the screen, with the purpose to insert it in its historical and artistic context, analyzing it in terms of formal, stylistic and also iconographic aspects. This way we achieved a broader and deeper knowledge of the work, of its connection with the historical and artistic context, with Tiziano's painting and, mainly, with the painting of Paris Bordon, and the possible meanings the clock might cover (AU)
