Mallarmé returning to France. Retranslation and reception in \The Impressionists and Édouard Manet\

Abstract

In this work I intend to study, under the bias of reception and retranslation studies, a littleknown yet essential essay by Stéphane Mallarmé: \"The Impressionists and Édouard Manet\" (1876). Little-known due to, among other things, having its French manuscripts location currently unknown thus forcing readers to consider this English translation as an original text , this essay is essential for being a terrain where the poet lays the foundation of both his latter writing style and critical theory brought about in Divagations (1897). To uphold this double status, on the one hand, I point out the only two publications of the English text in France; on the other, the existence of six retranslations produced throughout the XXth century until the early years of this XXIst century. Accordingly, my attempt here is to give a closer look towards this essay; its story, its place within Mallarmé\'s oeuvre, as well as the historicity of its appearences in France faced with the historicity of Mallarmé\'s oeuvre franc-anglophone reception. To do so, I first present the original English version with by its side my own retranslation to Portuguese. Thereafter I propose a thought on the importance of this text in the paradigm of the poets works. I then proceed to a chronological review concerning some distinctive interpretations of his oeuvre, from his days to ours. Finally, I bring this study to a close by detailing the events that brought Mallarmé\'s essay back to French land either editorially, in both English versions, or translatively, in all French retranslations. The theoretical panel behind this last endeavor is a reflection on the manipulation procedures (LEFEVERE, 1992) editorial, translative, critical which have followed such events. What I will try and sustain is that \"The Impressionists and Édouard Manet\", despite all tortuous patches through which it was handled, is actually an indispensable text when it comes to considering Mallarmé\'s poetic thought. For it stands as the first to refer to his idea of crisis; for it gives us hints of what would become Mallarmé\'s mature prose style, including the critical-poem as a form; for it is, above all, a translation.
