Abstract

This dissertation aims to understand the reconstruction of socio-cultural identity and (SILVA, 2003) and the (re)invention of traditions (HOBSBAWM, [1984]; 1999) in the context of everyday life shared between different generations of immigrants, between social spaces and under the context of immigration visibility (JARDIM, 2013) in its political and cultural aspects. In this sense we intend to focus on the folklore fraternity of Caporales San Simón São Paulo-Brasil, highlighting gestures, costumes and the festivities called folklore by the immigrants. The focus is to understand sociocultural identity and the social links between generations of immigrants in São Paulo. The hypothesis proposed is that the Caporales San Simón Fraternity of folklore exerts an agency (ORTNER, 2007) around the cycle of festivities (SILVA, 2003), dances and costumes between Bolivia and São Paulo. The circulatory territory (TARRIUS, 2000, p. 41) thus conformed and the presence of symbols which also circulate. With these diacritical signs (CUNHA, 1986) ¿ that is, the (re)invented traditions (HOBSBAWM, [1984] 1999). Those Bolivians and their descendants (re) construct their sociocultural identity (SILVA, 2007) in the society they have migrated into by strengthening their social unity and practice. This study applies the reflexive method (FONSECA, 2008) to this fraternity¿s dance, focusing on the uses of folklore and exploring its connections with the broader social relations between generations of immigrants and between them and the Brazilians in the context of immigration (MITCHELL, 2010). By the use of writing, photography and voice recorder we seek to map out the different narratives about the meaning of the fraternity and folklore dance for its members. In this context fraternity members are seen as the protagonists and actors of their own migratory process, which is revealed in the very construction of social links between generations and between the starting point and destination of this Bolivian migration (AU)
